Over half a million backyard trampolines are sold in our country every year. So, it’s safe to say that trampolines are pretty popular in American homes. With such popularity comes a lot of apprehension as well, especially in terms of safety. Are Toddlers Trampoline Safe?
Are trampolines a hazard for children?
Will they cause injuries?
Can toddlers play on them?
As parents, you worry about your child’s safety. You feel it’s your responsibility to be thoroughly certain of the safety of your toddler before you let them play on the trampoline.
So, let’s figure this out together, are trampolines safe for 2-year-olds?
The popularity of trampolines in the United States has led to an increase in the frequency of injuries. From 2009 to 2018, there have been over 800,000 injuries due to trampolines.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, trampolines at home are strongly discouraged. Children and adolescents still enjoy using them recreationally. The Academy updated its policy statement on trampolines based on current research on the prevalence, patterns, and mechanisms of trampoline-related injuries.
Trampolines at home are unsafe for children, even more so for toddlers. Since toddlers are at a stage where their bones are still developing, they are more prone to harming their bones, joints, and growth plates while trampolining.
However, if your toddler plays on a trampoline in a certified trampoline park, you would not have to worry about injuries. Trampoline parks have to prioritize safety precautions, and all their staff is trained to monitor and assist your little ones throughout your visit.
53% of injuries were caused due to an awkward landing on the trampoline surface.
22% of injuries were caused by falling off of the trampoline.
13% of them were caused due to colliding with other jumpers.
11% were caused while doing a dangerous somersault.
It is hard to imagine a toddler suffering through these common trampoline injuries. A 2-year-old will have adult supervision when on the trampoline. So, the chances of awkward landings, falls, and collisions are pretty less. Somersaults and 2-year-olds are also unlikely to happen, especially on a trampoline.
So, are toddlers trampoline safe? if you ask us, trampolines are safe for children below the age of 4 as well. Toddlers can certainly enjoy their benefits, provided safety is given priority.
